4 SEASON EMPLOYEES ASSIST 4 GIRLS FROM SMOKING VEHICLE :

By Paul Fitzgerald Bennett

You'd think that helping four children to safety from an overturned vehicle would garner an employee of the month honor. Not so for Alice Poindexter. The downtown Houston Four Seasons Hotel employee will have to be satisfied with being a January nominee.

"Now, why do you have to even go there," said the 25 year house keeping supervising veteran to a New Majority reporter recently. "It don't matter who wins. We have plenty of good employees."

But none of them have played the role of Superwoman like Ms. Poindexter did last month. She said she and fellow employee Roderick Robinson were talking and eating breakfast on a cool January morning in the employee cafeteria.

"All of a sudden somebody said look!" said Ms. Poindexter.

What they saw was the aftermath of a Ford Expedition turned upside down thanks to the driver of a Ford F-150 which had run the red light on the back side of the hotel on Caroline and Dallas.

"Roderick pulled out his cell phone and called 911 and ran outside," said Ms. Poindexter.

When he got there, the front desk supervisor saw a father and four daughters aged 1-4 years old stuck in the Expedition.

"The father's leg was messed up pretty bad. And the baby was bleeding a little bit from her head," said Mr. Robinson.

When Ms. Poindexter saw Mr. Robinson with the 1-year old in his hand while attempting to help the other four family members from the smoking vehicle, she ran down stairs and took the toddler from Mr. Robinson.

"I noticed the father was only wearing sandals and none of the children were wearing any shoes. So I ran back upstairs and got some blankets for them until the ambulance came," said Ms. Poindexter.

Both say neither the father nor the children were in a life ending situation. And since the accident, neither has heard from the family.

"It doesn't matter," said Mr. Robinson. "I have two daughters. If something like that ever happened to them, I just hope that someone else would do the same thing."

"I've seen Roderick react like that a lot," added Ms. Poindexter. "Like if somebody at the hotel is about to have an accident, he's always quick to react. I am so proud of him."

And what about yourself, Ms. Poindexter? "It's something you would hope anybody would do if they saw someone in danger," she said. Regardless, if you are awarded employee of the month or not.
